An Action Plan for Receiving

“We must come in quiet confidence, with an open and receptive mind, a believing heart, naturally, sanely, expectantly.”

Science of Mind, page 447

I love this quotation from the Science of Mind by Ernest Holmes because it is easy to understand and filled with tips for receiving.  It’s a great action plan for skillful receiving.  It engages head and heart, action, attitude, and faith – what a powerful combination!

We must be open and receptive, abandoning preconceived ideas about how our good will show up.  If you like improv acts, next time you see one watch how the actors always say “yes” to whatever the others in the scene offer.  They go with what’s presented, and the results are typically clever and hilarious.  Let’s remember that as we go about our days, and see what unexpected blessings come.

A believing heart is also required; we must expect our good to appear.  Christians will remember that the Master Teacher agreed, saying that whatever we ask for believing we have received we will receive.  Notice it’s the heart, not the mind, that’s doing the believing, according to Holmes.  Feel into the belief.  Picture the good and feel loved at that moment.

The process is a sane and natural one.  Of course, I love the “sane” part!  If you’ve read my book or even my newsletter for a while, you know things that are logical and natural appeal to me.  What healthy, loving parent deprives their child of what is needed?  Caring for what we create and love comes naturally to us mortals, so of course it would for the Universe as well.  If you doubt the sanity of this process, I invite you to visit my reading list found under the Resources tab of my website.  Enlightened people have been teaching this for centuries.

Finally, we approach it all with quiet confidence.  We don’t need to be a Toastmaster, spouting our beliefs to all who will listen.  Let us turn within to that place of trust where we know we know.  When doubt begins, gently acknowledge it as an old habit.  Remember a time when you received something wonderful, perhaps unexpectedly, and feel the excitement of receiving it all over again. Remind yourself that if it happened before, it can happen again (there’s the sane part), and let joy over the expected blessing wash away the feelings of doubt.

Receiving is a continuous process that we can experience with grace and ease.  Let’s trust Holmes to show us how.
