A Season for Nonviolence was founded by Arun Gandhi and Michael Bernard Beckwith and celebrates it sixteenth anniversary in 2013. The Season runs annually from January 30 through April 4 with the intention to “bring interfaith communities together to teach personal responsibility for creating peace in our world.” Its website notes that nonviolence is “a powerful way to heal, transform and empower our lives and our communities.” Isn’t that what Newtown, CT (and all of us for that matter) need right now?
I encourage you to join me in committing to nonviolence in 2013. To get us started, the Season website is a great place to begin. Among the many resources I found the following:
- Daily Commitments to Live By – 64 ways for the 64 days of the season
- 52 Weekly Practices – continue promoting nonviolence all year with weekly practices
- Workplace Pledge of Nonviolence – for your place of work
- Family Pledge of Nonviolence – get your whole family involved
- Nonviolent Conflict Resolution – for schools
Please don’t dismiss this thinking that your actions can’t make a difference. They can and they do. Remember the words of the Master Teacher – “wherever two or three have come together in my name, there I am.” I’m in, and several people have already contacted me, so we’ve met our numbers. How about you?
