De-Stressing Your Distress

Workshop Length: 1 hour

Purpose: To learn to avoid distress and discover to manage and reduce feelings of stress

Description:   Participants learn how to face the demands of work and life without feeling rushed, anxious or overwhelmed at times.  They explore the difference between good stress (eustress) and bad stress (distress) as well as the causes and symptoms of distress.  They also assess their current vulnerability to stress and identify areas where they can reduce their potential for feeling distress.  Finally, the participants learn to recognize the ineffective de-stressors sometimes used and commit to practicing effective, proactive ways to avoid distress.  The detailed assessment really helps participants focus on the most effective ways they can reduce their stress, and the proactive de-stressors help them avoid it altogether.

Objectives:
  • Differentiate between distress (bad stress) and eustress (good stress)
  • Identify the causes of distress so they can be avoided when possible
  • Recognize the signs of distress in yourself and others
  • Determine their current vulnerability to stress
  • Distinguish effective from ineffective de-stressors
  • Commit to acting on at least one proactive de-stressor

Program Materials:
  • 13-page Participant Guide including a stress vulnerability assessment, action plan, and evaluation form
  • 10-slide PowerPoint program
